DCPS w/ Pulitzer Center “The Third Annual Everyday DC Exhibition”
“Everyday DC” is a photography exhibition that visualizes daily life in Washington, DC through the eyes of sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students from DCPS middle schools throughout the District. The exhibition is a culmination of a multi-week photojournalism unit designed by the education team at the Pulitzer Center and the DC Public Schools Visual Arts Department that teachers students visual literacy and photography skills. The unit was inspired by the “Everyday Africa” Instagram feed, initiated and curated by journalists Peter DiCampo and Austin Merrill, which attempts to redirect our focus from the common media portrayals of Africa to the everyday experiences of most Africans.

National Cherry Blossom Festival - Youth Art Contest 2019
Arts and Culture to run in conjunction with the Annual National Cherry Blossom Festival
The National Cherry Blossom Festival celebrates the legacy of a “kind act” that occurred over 100 years ago and lives on through annual events and programs. As part of the annual festivities we invite students from DC public and public charter schools in grades K through 12 to participate in the Youth Art Contest. Schools in every DC Ward participate; with an overwhelming majority of those schools being considered Title 1 schools, or schools serving high numbers of economically disadvantaged children. Students create artwork that tells their story based on the theme—via symbols, murals, physical trees and icons. As a culmination of the Youth Art Contest, the students artwork submitted are showcased publicly throughout the Festival at Pepco Edison Place Gallery Exhibit in Washington, DC.
