Pepco’s ZooLights Display Shines Brightly on Environment
When the National Zoo went looking for a sponsor for its 1st Annual ZooLights winter light display last year, Pepco gladly wanted to be a part of “powering” the zoo.
But the local utility also wanted to demonstrate its commitment to energy efficiency given the environmental challenges facing the country. As a result, Pepco lit up the winter wonderland of animals using environmentally friendly light-emitting diode (LED) lights.
“It was a great example of us sponsoring a good cause while also demonstrating careful consideration for the environment,” said Thomas Graham, president, Pepco Region.
The lower half of the zoo, from the Small Mammal House down to the pedestrian entrance at Lion/Tiger Hill, was transformed into a dazzling winter wonderland of animals in LED lights, which use about 90 percent less electricity than traditional incandescent lights.
Pepco already is working on plans to power ZooLights next year.
