Company, Customers Partner for ‘Green Power’
In an effort to preserve the environment, some Pepco customers are considering generating their own electricity using "green" (or renewable) resources, such as solar and wind. In the electric industry, this is known as Net Energy Metering.
Pepco offers its customers Green Power Connection ™. This enables customers to install renewable-powered generators. Here's how it works:
A customer who successfully completes the application process will receive a net energy capable meter.
- Net energy capable meters run forward to record energy used from the grid when the customer is unable to generate enough energy to cover their consumption.
- Net energy meters run backward if/when the customer generates more energy than they consume.
On days when the customer produces more energy than they need, their electric meter runs in reverse, reflecting the energy they're sending back to the regional power grid. In cases when they need to draw energy from the grid, their meter runs forward as it normally would.
The customer's monthly Pepco bill will include the standard customer charges. However, in the energy supply portion of the bill, they will be charged for the "net" amount of energy used. That means we first subtract the kilowatt-hours of electricity produced from the amount the customer used - resulting in lower energy costs.
Net energy meter customers have separate electric generating systems at their premises and are at the forefront of a wave of change involving the energy industry. Because the utility does not specifically measure the energy produced on-site by the customer's generation system, the net energy meter customer cannot see the full extent of their energy consumption through Pepco's online tool, My Account. We are currently working on a solution to benefit these customers.
Customers who install renewable energy sources must first submit an application and receive utility approval to link their system to Pepco's. This is done to ensure safety and compatibility with our electrical system. If you're interested in generating your own electricity, here is some general information:
- Research the types of systems available to you. Customers should know that their renewable energy-generating system can be sized to meet all, or part, of their overall energy needs.
- Once your research is finalized, decide which type of system is best suited to meet your energy needs.
- Interview and select a reputable installing contractor, who will typically handle the application process both with Pepco and the District of Columbia, any rebate forms, permits, inspections, etc.
- Applications for interconnection are processed on a first-come, first-served basis.
- The appropriate application fee must be submitted with a completed application in order to begin processing your application for interconnection.
- The following formula should be used to calculate application fee:
MD DC Level 1 No fee $100 Level 2 $50 + $1 per kW $500 Level 3 $100 + $2 per kW $500 Level 4 $100 + $2 per kW $1000
- Customer generator equipment should not be installed until Pepco communicates that the initial application has been approved and provides a formal approval to install notification.
- In order to facilitate the application review process, it is important that all documentation requiring customer signature and payment is received by the established deadline, which will be communicated, as necessary. If signed documents are not received by the established deadline, the application for interconnection will be denied.
