Pepco Cares About Your Energy Usage
Hello everyone. I’m Debbi Jarvis, with Pepco.
We’ve heard your concerns about high electricity bills. And we’re listening. We’d like to provide some perspective into what may have caused a change in some customer bills. We also want to offer ideas that may help Pepco customers manage energy consumption for the remainder of the winter season.
January was an unusually cold month. We experienced many days of single digit temps and temps in the teens. The National Weather Service reports in our area, this was the coldest January in five years. As a result, many people may have spent more time in their homes which may have increased electricity usage, especially if you have electric heat. Many heat pumps run constantly when the temperature is below 30 degrees. Over the years, we have noticed an increase in electricity usage due to an increase in the number of computers, game consoles, plasma TVs and the myriad of home electronics now in people’s homes.
Also, many customers experienced an extended billing cycle in December and January ranging from 34 to 38 days vs. the normal cycle of 28 to 32 days. These longer billing cycles were the result of the many holidays in December and January and the Inauguration of President Obama.
As for rates, the Public Service Commission approved new supply rates that did go into effect in October for Maryland customers and in June for District residents. That does mean that the rate that you paid in the winter of 2008 is different than what you are seeing in 2009; however, there has been no increase since October.
Now, what to do? We do want you to call us so that we can help analyze your bill, make payment arrangements or if needed direct you to your local energy assistance agencies.
Right now, we are experiencing a higher than normal call volume which has increased the wait time in talking directly to a rep. We are asking for your patience. Our hours of operation are between 7am and 8pm, Monday through Friday.
