Choices and Rates
What Customer Choice Means to You
For many years, regulated utilities were the sole electricity suppliers in their service territories. They generated electricity and delivered it to you at rates set by regulatory commissions. Now residential and commercial PHI customers in the District of Columbia, Delaware, Maryland and New Jersey are free to buy their electricity from the supplier of their choice. This is called deregulation or customer choice and refers only to the supply side of the utility industry.
To customers who do not choose an alternative supplier, Pepco continues to supply electricity under regulated rates. This is called Standard Offer Service, MD SOS, DC SOS. And – as always – we still deliver electricity to all our customers via an extensive network of electric power lines. We maintain the power lines and respond to emergency and routine service calls.
