US DOE 2011 Solar Decathlon

Pepco's commitment to the environment and to renewable energy sources is an important part of our Blueprint for the Future, Pepco's plan to use new technologies and energy efficiency programs to help customers manage their energy use and costs. That is why Pepco is a proud sponsor of the 2011 Solar Decathlon. From smart meters and alternative fuels for our fleet of vehicles to energy efficiency programs for our customers, Pepco is working to meet today's energy challenges.

The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2011 challenges 20 university teams to design, build and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy efficient and attractive. Taking place in September on the National Mall's West Potomac Park in Washington, D.C., the competition demonstrates innovative clean-energy technology research and development, shows consumers the potential of solar-powered living and develops a well-trained workforce of engineers, architects and entrepreneurs uniquely prepared for green jobs.

Teams compete for points in 10 contests, ranging from design excellence to efficient use of energy throughout the home. A new contest category this year is affordability. The winner of the competition is the team that best blends affordability, consumer appeal and design excellence with optimal energy production and maximum efficiency.

The schedule for the 2011 Solar Decathlon is as follows:

  • Assembly of Houses – September 14 – 20
