Pepco Marks Earth Day With Anacostia River Cleanup; Company Teams With Anacostia Watershed Society, Capital River Relief

Pepco employees are participating in two Anacostia River cleanups over the next several days in celebration of Earth Day. Pepco’s Benning Service Center, located near the Anacostia in Northeast Washington, will serve as one of four gathering points for cleanup activities on Saturday, April 17, and on Monday, April 19, some 60 Pepco employee volunteers will work in two shifts to rid the river and shoreline of debris.

“The river cleanups offer the company and its employees a great ‘hands-on’ opportunity to participate in proactive environmental stewardship, which is a core value at Pepco, not just on Earth Day, but every day of the year,” said Jim Potts, Vice President, Environment for Pepco Holdings, Inc.

The upcoming events are part of the month-long Earth Day river cleanup effort organized by Capital River Relief, a partnership of environmental, community, business and government organizations dedicated to improving the quality of the Anacostia and Potomac rivers and watersheds.

Capital River Relief has anchored a 140-foot barge on the Potomac that serves as a temporary repository for the debris collected during the cleanups. Upon completion of the cleanup activities later this month recyclable items will be transported to recycling facilities and the remainder will be taken to conventional landfills.

In addition to its employee efforts, Pepco is a “River Warrior” level financial contributor to Capital River Relief and a long-time partner with the Anacostia Watershed Society.
