Heat Pushes Electricity Use to New Record

Pepco expects customers` demand for electricity to again break new records today as a result of the extremely hot, humid weather blanketing the area.

While the company expects to be able to deliver enough electricity to meet the heavy demand for power, Pepco is asking customers to use energy prudently to help prevent possible power supply problems, and at the same time save money on their electric bills.

Pepco broke its all-time peak demand at 5 p.m. Monday as customers demanded 6,452 megawatts of power. The previous peak 6,364 MW set July 29, 2002.

By dialing up the thermostat to 78 degrees, a temperature still within a reasonable comfort range, will help reduce their cooling costs. For every degree increase, customers can save 3 percent to 5 percent. Use of a fan in an occupied room will also make the air feel cooler than it actually is.

Some other measures that can save energy are:

• Close curtains and blinds to keep out the sun and retain cooler air inside,
• Postpone using major electric appliances such as stoves, dishwashers and clothes dryers until the evening hours,
• Turn off non-essential lights, appliances and equipment

Pepco will continue to monitor conditions and request the public`s assistance as necessary.
