PEPCO EXPRESSES SYMPATHY TO FAMILY, FRIENDS OF ROBBERY VICTIM

Pepco Reminds Customers to be Cautious; Always Check for Identification

WASHINGTON, D.C. - On Wednesday, individuals purportedly posing as Pepco employees gained entry to a customer's home resulting in a robbery and a homicide. "First and foremost, on behalf of the Pepco community, I would like to offer my deepest condolences for the family and friends of the shooting victim. When imposters commit criminal acts such as this, they are deeply tragic. It is important to remember to be aware and exercise caution at all times," said Thomas H. Graham, President, Pepco Region following the event.

In the wake of this crime, Pepco wants to remind home and business owners to practice safety when someone claiming to represent a business contacts them either in person or by telephone. The recent fatality involving individuals posing as utility workers for the purpose of gaining home entry reemphasizes the need to be safe and knowledgeable when someone comes to your door.

"The safety of our customers and their families is paramount. If a Pepco employee comes to your door, ask them for identification; if they don't have it, call the police. Do not let them enter. If you have any suspicions whatsoever, do not open your door and immediately call the police," said Graham.

Many companies and individuals, including Pepco, will contact customers in person or on the phone for various business reasons. If someone claims to represent a company, whether the company is Pepco or another entity, it is important that customers take precautions to verify that the person is affiliated with the company.

Customers are advised to ask for official photo identification from any person claiming to represent Pepco. Employees from reputable companies, such as Pepco, will carry official company identification cards.

Once again, if you think someone might be posing as a Pepco employee please call 911.
