Pepco Supports Montgomery County Public Schools Educational Scholars Program

STEM Students Participating in the Achieving Collegiate Excellence and Success (ACES) Program

Washington, D.C. - Pepco is providing $25,000 to support the Achieving Collegiate Excellence and Success (ACES) program, a collaborative effort between Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), Montgomery College and the Universities at Shady Grove. The program will be in 10 MCPS high schools this year and will provide targeted interventions and support to students in order to keep them on track for college enrollment. Students will receive special instruction and academic enrichment in preparation for pursuit of a post-secondary education degree in a STEM - science, technology, engineering and math discipline.

"As students strive to make informed decisions about higher education opportunities and goals, it is important to us to support the efforts of our local schools and the families that we serve," said Jerry Pasternak, Pepco region vice president. "We appreciate these opportunities to give back to the communities we serve."

The ACES program encourages students to pursue degrees in STEM disciplines. Students are identified by Grade 9 and provided support to help keep them on track for college enrollment. As students enter Grade 11 they are assigned academic coaches from Montgomery College who help create and support a successful path through college.

The ACES program begins in the 2013-2014 school year. Our contributions will help support

  • Parent workshops on planning for the cost of college
  • Career Day events at Montgomery County Public Schools
  • Career exploration days at Pepco sites
  • Enrollment in AP-Prep course for a STEM discipline and financial assistance for AP test
  • STEM job shadowing with Pepco mentors
