Pepco Prepares for Approaching Storm System

Washington, D.C. - Pepco is monitoring an approaching winter storm system that has the potential to impact service for our more than 815,000 customers. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory from 10 p.m. tonight until midnight tomorrow.

Current models predict between 1 to 3 inches of snow and any amount of accumulated snow has the possibility of impacting service in the Pepco service territory, which covers the District as well as parts of Montgomery and Prince George's Counties.

Pepco has about 150 linemen, 200 contractors and 200 tree crews available to respond to any outages that occur and, depending on the severity of the storm, can bring in additional resources.

Last month, more than 24 inches of snow fell during storm Jonas. However, Pepco customers were largely untouched by any outages thanks in large part to significant investments in reliability made during the last five years.

Those investments include protecting overhead lines from falling trees and strengthening the transmission system itself with stronger equipment.

Safety is our No. 1 priority. We urge customers to stay clear of any lines that come down and to avoid any working crews that respond to the area. Customers should always assume that downed wires are energized and to avoid them. Customers are asked to immediately report a downed wire by calling 1-877-PEPCO-62 (1-877-737-2662).

We also ask customers to let us know if they lose their power. They can report outages by calling 1-877-PEPCO-62 (1-877-737-2662), visiting pepco.com or through our mobile app, available for download at pepco.com/mobile app.

Customers should check their emergency supply kits and be prepared in case they lose power. Emergency kits should include a battery-powered radio or television, flashlight, a first-aid kit, battery-powered or windup clock, extra batteries, special needs items, an insulated cooler and a list of important and emergency phone numbers. Customer should also identify a safe alternate location in case of an extended outage and tune to local news broadcasts for the latest weather and emergency information.

Customers can find additional tips on preparing for a storm on our website, pepco.com.
