Pepco Crews Continue To Rebuild System Damaged By Tornado

500 Customers Remain Without Power

September 26, 2001

Pepco crews, assisted by crews from other utilities, continue work to rebuild sections of Pepco`s electric system in parts of College Park and Beltsville, Maryland, damaged by Monday night`s tornado. Severe damage from the tornado uprooted nearly 100 utility poles and toppled large sections of power lines serving the area. Approximately 500 customers remain without power as of 6 a.m.

More than 125 crews are working 12 hour shifts to restore service. Although power has been restored to more than half the customers initially affected by the storm, the remaining work to cut away damaged equipment and rebuild it is a tedious, time-consuming process. Additionally, some customers experienced damage to electric meters and their household electrical systems that will require them to have repairs made before Pepco can safely turn power back on. For these reasons, a few customers may not have service restored until as late as Friday evening.
