Pepco customers demanded an April record peak of 5,212 megawatts of power Wednesday as homes and businesses switched on air conditioners to cope with the Washington area`s record-breaking, summer-like weather. With the year`s first heat-wave continuing today, the company said it is assured that adequate supplies of power are available to meet customer demand now and through the summer months.
With temperatures hovering in the mid-90`s Wednesday, demand for electricity peaked at 5:33 p.m. as the business day ended. The reading marked the first time that Pepco`s net operating demand for power exceeded 5,000 mw in April. Pepco`s previous non-summer peak was 5,010 mw on Jan. 18, 1994. The all-time record was 6,140 mw on Aug. 9, 2001.
