Curtailable Load and Kilowatchers Programs Activated to Reduce Demand
Pepco and the other regional utilities today are requesting that customers use electricity wisely because of heavy electricity demand resulting from the hot and humid weather blanketing the area.
In addition, Pepco has implemented its load management programs, which includes the Kilowatchers Club programs, from noon - 6 p.m. today for commercial and residential customers. More than 207,000 residential customers volunteer to allow Pepco to cycle their air conditioners off-and-on periodically on weekday afternoons for no longer than six hours. These programs are designed to reduce customer demand.
With extreme weather conditions predicted for today, demand for electricity is expected to continue to increase. Pepco suggests the following energy conservation tips, if health permits, especially between the hours of 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., when demand is at its highest:
While Pepco expects to have enough electricity to meet the demands for power, the PJM Interconnection, of which Pepco is a member, is asking customers to use energy prudently to help prevent possible power supply problems.
PJM`s region includes all or parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. PJM operates the world`s largest competitive wholesale electricity market and North America`s largest power grid.
