Pepco Customers Set New Peak Demand on Monday

As the heat wave continues, Pepco and other regional utilities today, for the second time this week, are encouraging customers to use energy wisely. Extremely hot, humid weather has pushed customer usage to record levels.

Pepco expects to have enough electricity to meet the heavy demand for power. However, the PJM Interconnection, of which Pepco is a member, is asking customers to use energy prudently to help avoid possible power supply problems.

Yesterday, Pepco customers set an all-time net operating peak demand for energy of 6,421 megawatts between 3 and 4 p.m. This exceeded the previous all-time net operating peak of 6,346 megawatts set one week ago on July 23.

Scorching heat and high humidity are again forecasted for today, and demand for electricity is expected to continue to rise. Pepco recommends the following energy conservation tips, health permitting, especially from 3-7 p.m., when electricity demand is at its highest:

• Close curtains and blinds to keep out the sun and retain cooler air inside your home or apartment,
• Set your air-conditioner thermostat higher than usual,
• Postpone using major heat-producing appliances like electric stoves and clothes dryers until the cooler evening hours, and
• Turn off non-essential lights, appliances and equipment.
