Pepco, Regional Utilities Continue to Encourage Wise Energy Use

For Immediate Release
August 2, 2002

As the region`s heat wave continues, Pepco and other mid-Atlantic utilities today are again encouraging customers to use energy wisely. This marks the fourth day this week that electric companies in the region have advised customers to use energy prudently.

Pepco expects to have enough electricity to meet the heavy demand for power. However the PJM Interconnection, of which Pepco is a member, is asking customers to use energy wisely to help avoid possible power supply problems.

Pepco recommends the following energy conservation measures, if health permits, especially from 3-7 p.m., when electricity demand is at its highest:

  • Close curtains and blinds to keep out the sun and retain cooler air inside your home or apartment,
  • Set your air-conditioner thermostat higher than usual,
  • Postpone using major heat-producing appliances like electric stoves and clothes dryers until the cooler evening hours, and
  • Turn off non-essential lights, appliances and equipment.

PJM`s region includes all or parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. PJM operates the world`s largest competitive wholesale electricity market and North America`s largest power grid.
