Pepco and Regional Utilities Ask Customers To Use Energy Wisely

Persistent Heat Drives Up Demand for Electricity

For Immediate Release
August 14, 2002

Pepco and the other regional utilities today are requesting that customers use electricity wisely because of heavy electricity demand resulting from the hot and humid weather blanketing the area.

With extreme weather conditions predicted for today, demand for electricity is expected to continue to rise. Pepco suggests the following energy conservation tips, if health permits, especially between the hours of 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., when demand is at its highest:

  • Close curtains and blinds to keep out the sun and retain cooler air inside your home or apartment,
  • Set your air-conditioner thermostat higher than usual,
  • Postpone using major heat-producing appliances like electric stoves and clothes dryers until the cooler evening hours, and
  • Turn off non-essential lights, appliances and equipment.

While Pepco expects to have enough electricity to meet the demands for power, the PJM Interconnection, of which Pepco is a member, is asking customers to use energy prudently to help prevent possible power supply problems.

PJM`s region includes all or parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. PJM operates the world`s largest competitive wholesale electricity market and North America`s largest power grid.
