This morning, working with the Montgomery County Fire Department, Pepco obtained the times that the fire department called Pepco's Control Center yesterday to report a dangerous situation relating to a downed wire in Silver Spring, Md. We reviewed our audio tapes of the calls and confirmed that a dispatcher did receive several calls from the fire department beginning around 2:30 pm yesterday, and that the gravity of the situation was explained. We deeply regret that a crew was not sent to the location until about 8:15 pm. The crew assessed the situation at that time and de-energized the line.

This incident was a failure to properly execute our procedures related to direct calls from police and fire personnel. We have removed the dispatcher from duty while we conduct a complete investigation. Company policies and procedures involving calls from police and fire personnel requiring priority response are now being reviewed with all personnel who handle these types of calls. We will determine what further measures we can implement to minimize the possibility of this type of situation happening again.
