More than 60 employees of Pepco Holdings Inc., the parent company of Pepco and its sister company Conectiv Power Delivery, are on their way south to help restore electric service disrupted by Hurricane Ivan. The employees, who are from across Pepco and Conectiv`s service territories, are expecting to spend up to two weeks helping to repair severely damaged electric systems in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, and Mississippi.

These employees will bring with them over thirty trucks, including twenty-two bucket trucks and other specialized equipment needed to speed the restoration. The employees leaving today will join 135 PHI contractors who were already in Florida helping to restore service in the aftermath of Hurricane Frances. Those 135 personnel will now move to other areas impacted by Ivan.

PHI Vice President of Emergency Preparedness Michael W. Maxwell said the company waited until today to send the crews in order to ensure that they would not be traveling through dangerous weather on the way south. He said that Pepco and Conectiv also wanted to make sure there was no risk of extensive damage to their systems, adding that the personnel will be called back if there is unforeseen damage to Pepco or Conectiv Power Delivery`s system.

Maxwell said the effort is being coordinated through a mutual assistance network of utilities that works together to ensure that crews are shared among utilities as efficiently as possible. "This is dangerous and specialized work. We`re proud of the employees that are taking time away from their families in order to help people recovering from such a devastating natural disaster."

Maxwell added that the series of severe hurricanes that have hit the U.S. this season reinforce the need for customers to be prepared for such emergencies. "We`re constantly working to prepare for such emergencies. We encourage our customers to take steps to prepare as well by having an emergency kit including flashlights, battery operated radios, plenty of water, dry food, medicine, and the like so that they can handle the extended outages that these events can cause."
