Pepco will deliver 500 smoke alarms to the District of Columbia Fire Department Wednesday, May 25, at 11 a.m., for distribution to residents unable to afford one, formally kicking off the utility's partnership program with emergency responders in the District and Montgomery and Prince George's counties.

"Officials in all three jurisdictions have embraced the concept of formally promoting electric safety initiatives through the Emergency Services Partnership Program," said Thomas H. Graham, President, Pepco Region. "The partnership was always in place, but this initiative gives it more focus and reinforces Pepco's commitment to coordinate more effectively with emergency services during community and regional emergencies."

Pepco is also providing 500 smoke alarms each to fire departments in Montgomery and Prince George's counties as part of an overall emergency preparedness effort that focuses on the community served by the company.

In response to the delivery of the alarms at Pepco's Edison Place Headquarters, 701 Ninth Street, N.W., DC Fire and EMS Chief Adrian H. Thompson said, "Every year, we give hundreds of smoke alarms to District residents through our Smoke Alarm Give Away Program. This generous donation from Pepco helps DC Fire and EMS continue this important life saving effort." DC Fire Marshal Richard Fleming will also participate.

In addition, Pepco is developing a safety video for first responders who are often called to accident scenes or fires that may involve electric wires or other electrical facilities. The video will be distributed to area emergency service agencies in time for Fire Prevention Month in October.
