Pepco is proud to be the lead sponsor of the National Zoo's first ZooLights holiday festival which will brighten the Zoo's walkways with thousands of energy-saving lights, some powered by an advanced hydrogen fuel cell.
Beginning Wednesday, the Friends of the National Zoo (FONZ) will hold its biggest and brightest event ever. The Zoo will shine with larger-than-life displays featuring some of the zoo's most popular animals, all constructed of light emitting diodes, which use about 90 percent less energy than traditional incandescent light bulbs.
"We are looking at every opportunity to demonstrate how we, as responsible corporate citizens, can be an example of energy efficiency," said Dennis Wraase, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, for Pepco Holdings Inc. parent company of Pepco.
The ZooLights experience also includes winter-themed arts and crafts, ice sculpting demonstrations, choral groups and story tellers. The entry arch to the lighting displays will be powered by a hydrogen energy fuel cell, which produces electricity by combining hydrogen with oxygen from the air. This patented new technology was created by Microcell and installed by havePOWER. Throughout the evening, Pepco employees will explain how to save energy at home.
ZooLights will be held at the National Zoo, Wednesdays - Sundays, November 28 Through December 30.
