Pepco Restoring Power as Heat Wave Nears

Service Restored to Over 90 Percent of customers

Pepco crews working around the clock have restored power to nearly 150,000 customers since the series of powerful storms slashed through the Washington area Wednesday. The crews are now focusing on the time consuming task of restoring power to small groups and individual homes.

"Pepco is concerned about our customers still without power in this weekend's hot weather," said Pepco Region President Thomas Graham. "Our crews are making every effort to restore electricity to those customers as quickly and safely as possible."

The series of storms that ripped through the area left some 160,000 customers without service. Pepco responded immediately with a rapid damage assessment and a call for dozens of additional crews from neighboring utilities, from as far north as New Jersey and as far south as North Carolina, to help restore power to its customers.

"Because of the heat and humidity, customers who are still without power may want to consider alternate arrangements, particularly for those with special needs, the elderly or very young children," said Graham.

Until power is restored, please remember:

  • Stay away from downed power lines. All downed lines should be treated as if they are energized, and individuals should not approach them or touch them.
  • To report downed wires and outages, customers are asked to call 1-877-PEPCO-62 (1-877-737-2662).
  • Extreme heat can be a danger to older people and those with medical conditions. Remember to check on elderly or home-bound neighbors, who may be susceptible to the effects of heat stress.
  • Close all drapes/blinds on the sunny side of the house.
  • Remember to drink plenty of fluids. During the warmer, daytime hours go to air-conditioned malls, libraries, movie theaters or any public place that is air conditioned.
  • If a family member appears overheated, use cool compresses to cool skin. Do not hesitate to contact a physician if you have a health-related question.
