Pepco Marking September as National Preparedness Month

Good time to prepare for emergencies as storms threaten region

WASHINGTON - With the onset of the peak Atlantic hurricane season and September's designation as National Preparedness Month, Pepco today advised customers to plan ahead for emergencies and avoid last minute scrambling.

"This is a good time to be prepared," said Vice President Mike Maxwell who heads Pepco's crisis management team. "Any one of these storms churning in the Atlantic is a potential threat to the mid-Atlantic region, possibly as early as this weekend."

Pepco is a participant in the 5th annual National Preparedness Month Ready Campaign sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security in a nationwide effort to encourage individuals, families, businesses and communities to prepare for emergencies.

The Ready Campaign and its DHS partner, Citizen Corps, says Americans should take a few simple steps to prepare by having an emergency kit; making a plan, being informed about the different types of emergencies and responses, and getting involved in community emergency preparedness activities.

February 2008 marked the Ready Campaign's fifth year at the Department of Homeland Security.
