Utility Subcontracts with Scope Services, Inc. to Recruit Area Meter Installers and Administrative Staff during UDC Event
Washington - In its mission to bring technologically-advanced "smart meters" to District of Columbia residents and to help promote area job growth, Pepco has commissioned minority-owned contractor Scope Services, Inc. to begin recruiting and training local workers to install 280,000 meters before the end of 2011.
To accomplish this critical work, Scope Services, Inc. will hold a one-day "Smart Meter" Deployment employment recruitment event at the University Auditorium on the campus of The University of the District of Columbia (UDC) on Saturday, August 28, 2010, from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. The venue is located at 4200 Connecticut Avenue, N.W. in Washington, D.C. Pepco representatives also will be on hand to answer questions and disseminate information about the smart meter project as it relates to the District of Columbia.
Pepco and Scope Services, Inc. staff have been working diligently with the District of Columbia Department of Employment Services (DOES) for weeks to ensure that area residents were given an opportunity to take advantage of some 50-60 meter installer and administrative support opportunities. Individuals applied through Pepco and DOES for these positions. More than 300 applications were received. Approximately 200-250 individuals will be invited to UDC by Scope Services, Inc. to complete the final phase of the recruitment process based on how closely their qualifications match the job requirements.
"Bringing this smart meter project to the District of Columbia has been a great part of our Blueprint for the Future vision for our customers,'' said Tom Graham, President-Pepco Region. "With the support of Mayor Fenty, the Council of the District of Columbia and approval from the District of Columbia Public Service Commission, we are moving forward with this installation process which will soon allow area residents to have state-of-the-art meters that will help them monitor and control their electricity use and reduce their energy costs."
Meter installers will be hired and trained by Scope Services, Inc. to disconnect, remove, install and reconnect electric power meters that are used to record the energy consumption of residential, commercial and industrial customers. The potential benefits of the new "smart meters" will empower customers to control their energy costs, decrease the time associated with restoring power, and reduce the need for estimated meter readings among other benefits.
