Pepco Helps Fuel the Electric Car Revolution

Pepco Region President to Speak at Capitol Hill Electric Vehicle Event

WASHINGTON, D.C. -Thomas H. Graham, Pepco Region President, will speak at the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) "Electric Transportation is Here" event on Capitol Hill, at noon, Wednesday, November 17. Pepco is one of three utilities operated by Pepco Holdings, Inc. The other two are Delmarva Power and Atlantic City Electric.

Mr. Graham will join EEI President Tom Kuhn along with Under Secretary of Transportation Roy Kienitz to discuss the benefits of electric vehicles and describe how Pepco and PHI are helping to pave the way for the future of electric car transportation in America, as the Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf electric vehicles are set to go on sale in Washington and other select cities at the end of the year.

"Pepco is proud to be an electric industry leader as the nation transitions to a new era of electric transportation," said Graham. "Pepco has installed two plug-in vehicle charging stations at the company's headquarters building here in the District. One of our Level II charging stations, which can recharge an electric vehicle in as little as three hours, will be on display at the event. This is part of the infrastructure that will be necessary to support the growth of electric transportation ."

EEI will also preview one of the 15 Chevy Volts that have been pre-released to the public.

Pepco Holdings, Inc. is adding 10 of the Chevrolet Volts to its fleet in late 2010 or early next year, as they become available from General Motors. These new plug-ins will be deployed across the PHI service area in the District, Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey.

PHI plans to install additional charging stations at company service centers across the region to support our fleet of plug-in vehicles. To ensure that the charging station infrastructure is in place, PHI is supporting state, local and municipal governments by advising them on the installation, management and operation of outdoor public electric vehicle charging stations to support electric transportation.

Also, PHI and other members of the electric power industry are focused on developing a smart grid that will deliver significant benefits, such as improving electric system efficiency and utilizing more renewable energy. Smart grid technology, coupled with appropriate rate structures, will help plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) owners choose the best time of day to charge their vehicles. This will help alleviate stress on the electric grid and optimize the benefits of PEVs. For more information on Pepco's Smart Grid plan visit http://www.pepco.com/energy/blueprint/.
