Annual Photo Contest Lights Up Creativity, Commitment at PHI

WASHINGTON - Nearly 100 photographs by employees of Pepco Holdings, Inc. are on display through Jan. 14 at Pepco's Edison Place Gallery, 701 Eighth St, NW in Washington's Penn Quarter. The works are entries in PHI's 2010 United Way Photo Contest. PHI's Corporate Communications Group started the annual contest in 2007 "as a United Way fundraiser, of course, but also as an event that could involve employees from across our company's far-flung territories," says Debbi Jarvis, PHI's Vice President of Corporate Communications. "We have achieved both those aims," she says, "but what's truly amazing is the creativity and high quality of the photographs our employees submit to the contest. And their fees helped us beat our 2010 United Way Campaign goal of $700,000 in employee contributions. With the company match of 50 percent, we'll be sending well over $1 million through United Way to agencies serving all our communities across the mid-Atlantic region."

PHI corporate photographer Rick Giammaria's retrospective exhibit of his work from the 1970s and early 1980s reward the visitor with both their high quality and their nostalgia quotient. Landmarks such as the pre-conversion Pension Building and national figures including boxing great George Foreman and then-Vice President George H.W. Bush are a ticket to that earlier time.

Completing the exhibit are conceptual photographs in black and white by gallery manager Anna Wonson. Wonson, a 2007 photography graduate of the Corcoran School of Art, is both a working photographer and a college-level teacher of photography in addition to her work at the Edison Place Gallery.
