Pepco Performs Outreach for Washington Area College Bound Students

WASHINGTON, D.C. - For the fifth consecutive year, The Guiding Light Leadership Program (GLLP) under the leadership of Donna Cooper, Region Vice President, District of Columbia, and Kim Watson, Region Vice President, Maryland Affairs, brought together 12 of the area's brightest students to be mentored by Pepco business executives while gaining exposure to one of Greater Washington's largest employers.

"Executive mentorship of high school seniors is a vital component of The Guiding Light Leadership Program," said Thomas Graham, President, Pepco Region and founder of the program. "The students become mentees, then develop a personal relationship with a successful business professional, giving them a rare opportunity to jump start their futures."

Dr. William R. Hite, Superintendent of Schools for the Prince George's County Public School System attended the closing ceremony. Dr. Hite stated, "The Guiding Light Leadership Program establishes a valuable mentor relationship for our students. By allowing them to interact with key business executives and senior managers from Pepco, it brings their future dreams closer to reality."

Students who participate in the program follow certain selection criteria, consisting of the following:

  • Must be currently enrolled in a high school within the Pepco service territory
  • Must be a graduating senior
  • Must have a 3.0 overall cumulative GPA
  • Must not be in a disciplinary status
  • Must be recommended by a homeroom teacher, a core subject teacher or a guidance counselor
  • Must be willing to attend three (3) one-day per month workshops at Pepco headquarters, 701 Ninth Street, NW, Washington, DC.

The GLLP curriculum is designed to give students information on tangible and intangible success factors that can be applied to school, work, or personal life. Full-day training sessions are structured such that time is allocated for mentors and mentees to engage in one-on-one conversations. Mentors deliver instructional materials on pre-identified subjects, provided in advance by Pepco's External Affairs staff.

The mentors provide students with valuable information in the following areas:

  • Project/Time Management - How managing your time makes a difference in your daily life.
  • Financial Literacy - The value of understanding credit and how to properly maintain your finances.
  • Business Etiquette - How to treat others with respect and dignity in this increasingly diverse workplace.
  • Power of Politics - The true political significance of business and finance on a global scale.
  • Ethics - Understanding the value of truth and honesty in the workplace.
  • Communications - The importance of that "first impression." How to prepare for your job interview.

"At the completion of the program, each student receives a $2,500 scholarship to the college of their admission," said Cooper.
