PHI Chairman Leads Saturday Cleanup at Kingman Island

Washington , D.C. -- More than 60 members of Pepco's "Green Team," that included employees and their family members, joined over one hundred other volunteers this morning to help to clean up the shoreline along the Kingman Island area of the Anacostia River. The results of the volunteer cleanup effort filled two industrial size, 40 yard refuse containers with trash and recyclable materials, including baseballs and basketballs.

Leading Pepco's team was Joseph M. Rigby, Chairman, President and CEO of Pepco Holdings Inc., the utility's parent firm.

"I was extremely pleased by the large turnout of people who were willing to volunteer their personal time to a very worthy project. It was an education to get up close and personal with the habitats of Kingman Island, and I am very proud that Pepco's "Green Team" was there in force to help restore the world's most valuable resource-clean water."

The Anacostia River Cleanup used volunteers along the shoreline on foot and in hip waders, and on the river in canoes and kayaks to retrieve trash bags filled with a variety of refuse that included plastics, glass, metal and paper products, and some unexpected items -- including baseballs, basketballs, footballs and soccer balls.

"Pepco has hundreds of employees who work and live near the Anacostia watershed, in addition to our hundreds of thousands of Washington area customers, said Mr. Rigby. "That is why it is only natural that we support the Anacostia River Cleanup - and its sponsor/organizer, the Anacostia Watershed Society."
