Pepco and Support Crews Work Around the Clock over July 4th Weekend
WASHINGTON - More than 200 Pepco and support crews worked around the clock over the July 4th weekend to restore power to more than 16,000 Pepco customers following a wave of violent and damaging thunderstorms. Wind gusts in excess of 50 miles per hour blew tree limbs into power lines causing power outages. As of 4:00 p.m. on Independence Day 2011, the last remaining customers affected by Sunday evening's storm were being restored.
"Pepco crews, crews from our sister utility, area contractors, and many Pepco support personnel forwent Fourth of July weekend festivities to make sure Pepco customers had their power restored as quickly and safely as possible," said Thomas Graham, President, Pepco Region. "Now that all the customers, who were affected by Sunday evening's storm, are restored, we all can enjoy family and friends and celebrate our nation's birthday."
To prepare for the storms, Pepco closely monitored the weather and pre-scheduled and dispatched crews throughout the region as well as called in extra internal and sustaining crews and support personnel to help restore power. Pepco will hold its afternoon crews in the event of additional storms this evening.
