Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown Along with Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett Visit Pepco Control Center
BETHESDA, Maryland - Pepco Region President Thomas H. Graham today led a tour of Maryland government executives to witness in action Pepco's strategic plan to restore service to customers who lost service in the wake of Hurricane Irene. Graham and Lt. Governor Anthony Brown viewed first-hand restoration activity in District Heights, Md., where Pepco and a dozen Gulf Shores Power mutual assistance crews from Florida combined forces to replace broken poles and wires and restore power.
Brown along with Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett then toured Pepco's Control Center in Bethesda, Md., where teams of support personnel are trading 12-hour shifts to manage the strategic restoration effort and continuous information flow to customers, the media, regulators, emergency management agencies and elected officials. At the time of the visit, Pepco had restored 207,000 customers, or nearly 95 percent of customers who lost power during Hurricane Irene.
While touring the control center, Lt. Gov. Brown addressed workers saying, "On behalf of the Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley and Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett, I want to let you know that we appreciate your efforts, the difficulty of the job you have, particularly during this phase of the restoration process. We are reminding customers to be patient and recognize that neither the Governor's office nor Pepco will be satisfied until all customers are restored. I assure customers that through my observations while touring the restoration activities all are actively engaged. I saw first hand how labor intensive and potentially hazardous the work is while visiting the District Heights work site. I urge Pepco to keep up the sense of urgency and to complete the restoration as quickly and safely as possible."
"We thank the Lt. Governor and Montgomery County Executive for visiting with our restoration teams who have been attacking the outages non-stop in the 72 hours since the hurricane hit," said Thomas H. Graham, President, Pepco Region. "Lt. Governor Brown made the important point that Pepco will not be satisfied until every customer is restored. Restoring every customer affected by Hurricane Irene is Pepco's top priority."
Pepco expects to restore service to all of its customers impacted by Hurricane Irene by Thursday evening.
Customers Urged to Continue Reporting Outages
The company is also urging customers to continue to report outages at pepco.com or by calling 1-877-PEPCO-62 (1-877-737-2662). Customers' reports are vital to Pepco's restoration efforts because, combined with other customer calls and the company's technology, they help identify the precise location of outages more quickly. Pepco also recommends that when reporting an outage that customers request a call back to verify whether their power has been restored.
If reporting an emergency or another life-threatening situation such as downed wires, customers also should call 1-877-PEPCO-62 (1-877-737-2662) and follow the prompts.
