Utility Makes $10K Donation Following Earthquake and Hurricane Irene
WASHINGTON - Pepco has made a $10,000 donation to the American Red Cross to provide a boost to local emergency assistance efforts. Whenever there is a tragedy such as a fire that has destroyed personal possessions and the people affected do not know where to turn, t he American Red Cross steps up to provide immediate assistance through shelter and financial support for food and clothing. Following the recent earthquake and Hurricane Irene, hundreds of displaced area residents sought emergency relief from the American Red Cross.
The American Red Cross in the National Capital Region worked around the clock providing preparedness messages to the community and deployed over l00 volunteers to help support shelters for both disasters. The Red Cross provided approximately 1,000 meals and snacks. Red Cross involved volunteers in supporting damage assessment, logistics, sheltering and feeding. In addition, l2 volunteers were deployed with four local emergency response vehicles to areas hit hard by the effects of Irene. Red Cross also provided canteen support for immediate responders.
"We know that after any disaster, the American Red Cross must replenish its funds to be prepared for the next crisis, big or small," said Debbi Jarvis, Vice President, Corporate Citizenship & Social Responsibility. "Every day, people are displaced by events that may not make the news. As a good corporate citizen we reached out to the Red Cross to assist them in continuing those efforts." Pepco challenges the Washington business community to join the effort to help American Red Cross prepare for the next crisis.
Linda Mathes, CEO of the American Red Cross in the National Capital Region thanked Pepco for its support. "We deeply appreciate Pepco's contribution. This will help men, women and children who were affected by these most recent disasters, and those to come" she commented. "This contribution translates into critical support for people in our community at a time when they need it most."
