Electric Utility to Sponsor Event at West Potomac Park
WASHINGTON - Pepco announced today its Sustainable Partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Solar Decathlon 2011. This collaboration provides an important showcase of the potential of solar power.
The Solar Decathlon is an award-winning program that challenges 19 collegiate teams to design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient, and attractive. The winner of the competition is the team that best blends affordability, consumer appeal, and design excellence with optimal energy production and maximum efficiency. Pepco will install "smart meters" capable of providing net metering for each of the homes in the solar village. The company will also facilitate the exchange of energy between the solar village and the grid.
"We are delighted to partner again with the Department of Energy on this important initiative. Pepco is committed to providing renewable power and smart grid technology to help our customers receive cost-effective energy services which will ultimately reduce the environmental impacts of those services," said Joseph M. Rigby, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Pepco Holdings, Inc., the parent company of Pepco. "At PHI, environmental stewardship is an investment in our nation's future."
Sponsors support the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon through in-kind contributions that help enable event organizers to hold a safe and successful event. Sponsors can also work with individual teams directly by providing in-kind donations, cash contributions, and other resources. Pepco, in conjunction with DOE, will provide volunteers who will serve as greeters, tour guides and special events coordinators.
"The Solar Decathlon depends on the valuable support of our many sponsors," said Richard King, director of the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon. "Our sponsors play an integral role in ensuring that the Solar Decathlon provides a rich learning experience for the student decathletes and that we effectively educate the public about the money-saving opportunities and environmental benefits presented by clean energy products and design solutions."
This year's Solar Decathlon will take place on the National Mall's West Potomac Park in Washington, D.C. Open to the public free of charge from September 23 through October 2, 2011, the Solar Decathlon enables visitors to tour the houses, gather ideas to use in their own homes, and learn how energy-saving features can help them save money today.
