45,000 Left Without Power After Severe Thunderstorm Friday
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Hundreds of crews have worked around the clock to restore power to about 99 percent of the 45,000 customers left without electricity after severe thunderstorms moved through the Pepco service territory Friday night.
Working with Pepco crews and contractors are personnel from utilities in Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
"We had about 700 personnel, assisted by about 150 field support personnel, out today," said Thomas H. Graham, President, Pepco Region. "We appreciate our customers' patience until we get this totally wrapped up."
Myriad other support personnel have performed such functions as emergency management personnel, senior leadership, government liaisons, customer advocacy, logistical support, communications, safety and environmental support.
As of 5:45 p.m., Prince George's County had about 340 customers without power, and the District of Columbia had just over 100. Montgomery County has already been fully restored.
The hardest hit areas had the bulk of the outages - Cheverly, Bladensburg and Hyattsville in Prince George's County; and the Michigan Park and Fort Lincoln areas in Northeast D.C. Those outages are expected to be fully restored later into Monday morning. Restoration for most of the District and Prince George's County is expected by very early morning hours Monday.
Much of the damage was caused by trees - many uprooted; some through buildings; and many that took down wires, broke crossarms and in some cases cracked or broke utility poles.
Customers without power who did not report outages are asked to by calling 1-877-PEPCO62, visiting pepco.com or through the mobile app, available for download through pepco.com/mobileapp. If power comes back on briefly but then goes out again, customers need to report that new outage.
