Azerbaijani Artist in Every Sense: Kamil Najafzade (1929-2011)

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Karabakh Foundation presents an exhibition honoring the late Azerbaijani painter, and major cultural figure Kamil Najafzade at the Pepco Edison Place Gallery, from August 28 through September 27. The exhibit, "Azerbaijani Artist in Every Sense: Kamil Najafzade (1929-2011)," features some 50 paintings by the painter as well as instructional materials demonstrating the artist's love of his family and of his country. The Edison Place Gallery will also host Azerbaijani films on Thursdays September 6, 20, and 27 at 6:30 p.m.

The Karabakh Foundation is a cultural charity foundation based in Washington, D.C., that seeks to increase awareness and understanding in the United States of the cultural heritage and traditions of the country of Azerbaijan, the Caucasus area, and the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan.

Najafzade's lifetime spanned Azerbaijan's years as a Soviet Socialist Republic and its first 20 years as the modern, independent Republic of Azerbaijan. Working as a film production designer, or director of photography, he created the look and feel of some 40 feature films, and defined a significant portion of Azerbaijan's modern artistic legacy.

Co-curating the exhibition are the artist's daughter Ainur (Anna) Najafzade Stenko, the artist's son Shamil Najafzade, and the executive director of the Karabakh Foundation, Diana Cohen Altman.

The Pepco Edison Place Gallery is located in Pepco's Edison Place headquarters, at 701 Ninth Street, NW, near the Verizon Center. Regular gallery hours are noon to 4 p.m., Tuesdays through Fridays. The Pepco Edison Place Gallery works with non-profit arts organizations to sponsor a series of diverse, high quality art exhibits on behalf of the community.
