Nov. 21 is New Deadline

Washington, D.C. - Pepco has extended until Nov. 21 the sign-up period for customers who would like to receive free trees through Energy-Saving Trees, an Arbor Day Foundation program that helps conserve energy and reduce energy bills through strategic tree planting. Pepco has approximately 1,300 free trees remaining for customers in Maryland and the District of Columbia through the program.

Pepco customers can reserve their free trees at arborday.org/pepcotrees. Customers can reserve up two trees per household, and the program will continue until all remaining 1,300 trees are reserved. In exchange for the free trees, customers are expected to care for the trees and plant them in the location provided by the online tool. The website offers an online tool that helps customers find the most strategic location for planting and estimates the annual savings that will result from the tree.

The trees will be delivered directly to the customer. The following species are available: redbud, crape myrtle, river birch, honeylocust, red maple and Northern red oak

The Energy-Saving Trees online tool was created by the Arbor Day Foundation and the Davey Institute, a division of the Davey Tree Expert Co., and uses peer-reviewed scientific research from the USDA Forest Service's i-Tree Software to calculate estimated benefits. In addition to providing approximate energy savings, the tool also estimates the tree's other benefits, including cleaner air, reduced carbon dioxide emissions and improved storm water management.

The Arbor Day Foundation has already named Pepco a Tree Line USA utility in recognition of its commitment to proper tree pruning, planting and care.
