Pepco Green Team Joins Anacostia River Cleanup at River Terrace

Utility Lends Helping Hands to Anacostia Watershed Society Annual Cleanup Celebration

Washington, D.C. -- Members of Pepco's "Green Team," including employees and their family members, will join dozens of other volunteers on Earth Day, Saturday morning, April 20, to help clean up the shoreline along the Anacostia River. In past years, the volunteer cleanup effort filled two industrial size, 40 yard refuse containers with trash and recyclable materials.

"Pepco has hundreds of employees who live near the Anacostia watershed and want to give back to their community," said Thomas H. Graham, Pepco, region president. "That is why it is only natural that we support the Anacostia River Cleanup and its organizer, the Anacostia Watershed Society."

The cleanup will run from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Leading Pepco's team is Fariba Mahvi, lead engineer, corporate environmental services.

"Pepco's Green Team will join the Anacostia Watershed Society, The District Department of the Environment, and other local organizations at River Terrace/Anacostia Fringe Wetlands to clean up the shore in honor of Earth Day," said Mahvi.

Last year's effort turned up a variety of refuse that included plastics, glass, metal, and paper products, and some unexpected items -- including baseballs, basketballs, footballs and soccer balls.
