Pepco Unveils WaterShed Sustainability Center

Earth Day Ceremony to Showcase Customer Focused New Technology

Washington, D.C. - Pepco will unveil the Pepco WaterShed Sustainability Center to the public following a dedication ceremony for local students, media and other guests on Earth Day. The center includes the energy-efficient house designed and built by students and faculty from the University of Maryland that won first place in the 2011 U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon on the National Mall.  Pepco Holdings Inc. (PHI) acquired the house in 2012 and worked with the student team to relocate it to the 5,000 square - foot site adjacent to Pepco's Rockville Service Center in Maryland.

The WaterShed Sustainability Center will serve as a living classroom and laboratory for sustainable energy practices that can be shared with customers. The home will have interactive displays that educate visitors with energy-saving ideas they can apply in their own homes.

New technology will be in place for customers to see and learn about including smart thermostats, ground and rooftop mounted solar panels, electric vehicle charging ports and smart meters.

"We are excited to provide access to new technology and valuable information to our customers on how to reduce energy usage and lower their monthly bills," said Karen Lefkowitz, vice president, business transformation, PHI. "The University of Maryland students and faculty have done something special and created an award winning platform that will help educate and benefit our customers, and ultimately the environment with its sustainability ideas for many years to come."
