WASHINGTON, D.C. - Pepco is working to repair a leak involving non-hazardous mineral oil that is used to insulate underground power cables. The fluid is not a health risk, and the leak is not expected to cause any customer power outages. Today we confirmed traces of non-toxic mineral oil in Rock Creek. Mineral oil does not cause an environmental threat. The National Park Service is on site to help monitor the conditions and does not anticipate any impacts to wildlife or people. All necessary containment measures have been made in Rock Creek.
Critical, round-the-clock work is necessary to make repairs in the area of Klingle and Adams Mill roads in northwest DC. A generator and excavating equipment are needed to complete the project. We will make every effort to reduce the noise and traffic impacts from this work.
We apologize for any inconvenience this causes and appreciate your patience as crews work as safely and quickly as possible to resolve this matter.
