Pepco and KID Museum Say STEM Rules!

WASHINGTON, D.C. (September 22, 2017) - Pepco and KID Museum are pleased to announce a new partnership promoting hands-on learning and innovation for Montgomery County youth. The partnership kicks off Sunday, Sept. 24, in downtown Silver Spring at KIDfest, a free, family festival celebrating innovation.

At this year's KIDfest, Pepco and KID Museum celebrate the grand opening of the Pepco Electronics Lab, an experiential learning lab at KID Museum designed to spark creativity and wonder. At the electronics lab debut, festival visitors are invited to "wire" a model house using circuits that will add lights and sounds. The hands on exhibits will also include an electronic wire loop game.

The Pepco Electronics Lab will be open to KID Museum visitors throughout the year, offering weekend "maker studio" sessions, after-school programs, and scheduled school visits. Programming will serve a range of ages, from elementary through middle school.

"Powering Innovation speaks to the joint interests of the company and the museum: it's our mission to offer high-quality, STEM learning to children throughout Montgomery County," said Cara Lesser, KID Museum Founder and CEO. "Our partnership with Pepco will make it possible for us to reach more kids from all backgrounds, exposing them to the types of hands-on experiences that excite learning and inspire innovative thinking."

"We want to create fun, interesting and engaging ways for young people to explore the potential of science and technology," said Tyler Anthony, Senior Vice President & Chief Operations Officer, Pepco Holdings. "By partnering with the KID Museum, we are able to provide resources that will stimulate STEM learning in a fun and creative environment."

The electronics lab will serve as a resource for KID Museum's new Invent the Future Challenge, where middle school students countywide are invited to design and prototype a solution to an environmental problem. Dedicated "Invention Basecamp" sessions, including hands-on instruction in electronics and programming, will run from October through April.
