Pepco Solar Purchase Further Expands Clean Energy for District Customers

15-year, 73-megawatt solar energy purchase agreement marks the largest solar purchase ever for Pepco DC customers.

Washington, D.C. (August 4, 2022) – Pepco has received approval from the Public Service Commission of the District of Columbia (DCPSC) to proceed with a 15-year agreement for the purchase of solar energy for its customers in the District of Columbia.  The agreement made with Invenergy, is for 73-megawatts of solar energy – enough to power about 13,850 average homes – and associated solar renewable energy credits that support the company's effort to provide its customers in the District with more clean and renewable energy. The solar facility is located in the PJM footprint, the regional power grid that includes the District of Columbia. This agreement marks the largest ever purchase of solar energy by Pepco for its customers in the District.

This new solar power purchase agreement builds on Pepco's commitment to meeting the renewable energy portfolio standards of the District of Columbia, which outlines that 100 percent of the energy purchased by Pepco and provided by other suppliers must be from renewable sources by 2032.

"This solar energy purchase is a perfect example of our broader effort to support the District's leading clean energy and climate goals," said Rodney Oddoye, senior vice president of Regulatory, Governmental and External Affairs for Pepco Holdings. "From partnering with our customers to interconnect their local solar with the local energy grid and connecting our customers with community solar opportunities through the District's Solar for All program, to the community solar facility recently installed at our own Benning Service Center, we are helping advance solar and other clean energy opportunities for our customers and communities in many different ways."

In addition to helping achieve the decarbonization goals outlined in Clean Energy DC, the District's clean energy and climate plan, Pepco's Climate Solutions Plan, which was submitted to the DCPSC, outlines an additional series of initiatives to help advance the development of solar and other distributed energy resources across the District. Pepco's Climate Solutions Plan demonstrates how the company will leverage the unique nature of the local energy grid as a 'connector and activator' to provide programs and opportunities for customers and communities to access and enable climate solutions equitably, inclusively, and affordably, while driving innovation and building resilience.

Part of this approach includes facilitating more local, clean distributed energy resources, such as solar, and accelerating renewable generation to help enable the clean energy future for all District residents in an equitable and efficient manner.

Pepco also is committed to helping customers connect their local solar PV systems with the local energy grid. To date, Pepco has helped more than 12,100 District customers interconnect their systems with the grid, for a total of 161 megawatts, or enough energy to power nearly 30,600 average homes.

Pepco also is supporting the Path to Clean goal of its parent company, Exelon, by cutting its operations-driven emissions in half by 2030 and achieving net-zero operations by 2050. The effort includes a series of initiatives, and is part of Pepco's DC Climate Commitment, a multi-faceted, action-oriented effort to help the District of Columbia achieve its leading greenhouse gas and climate change goals. Collectively, and in support of the District's goals, Pepco will focus on actionable measures to reduce its greenhouse gas footprint, deliver innovative solutions that will empower customers to meet their climate change objectives, and drive collaborative efforts with stakeholder and community partners to achieve greater greenhouse gas reduction across the District, while preparing for a future impacted by climate change.
