Pepco Donates Smoke Alarms to Help Keep Residents and Communities Safe

WASHINGTON, D.C. (October 19, 2018)- Pepco is recognizing National Fire Prevention Month by donating 3,000 smoke alarms to local communities through its partners at the District of Columbia, Prince George's County, and Montgomery County Fire and Emergency Management Services Departments. This is the 14th year Pepco has donated these important life-saving devices.

"Safety is a core value of Pepco, and the safety of our customers and the communities that we live in and serve are our top priority, said Donna Cooper, Pepco region president. "Smoke alarms are a "must" in all homes and education on their installation and operations is critical. Our donation of smoke alarms to our valued local emergency services partners, through Pepco's Emergency Services Partnership Program, helps us to collaboratively make a difference in the lives of those that we both serve and deliver on our commitment to our communities."

Since 2004, Pepco has worked with local emergency service providers to donate nearly 40,000 smoke alarms to communities across Maryland and the District of Columbia. Pepco maintains a close partnership with these local fire departments and other first responders, who work alongside Pepco employees during storms and other emergencies. In addition to the annual smoke alarm donation, the company's Emergency Services Partnership Program helps coordinate trainings, share best practices, and sponsor other charitable giving and volunteer activities with area emergency response teams throughout the year.

National Fire Prevention Month is an opportunity to bring awareness to the risks of fire and provide educational resources to promote fire safety practices. A few important tips from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) on smoke alarm safety include:

  • Install smoke alarms in and outside of every bedroom of your home.
  • Test all smoke alarms at least once per month. Press the "test" button to ensure the alarm is working properly.
  • Replace all expired smoke alarms.
