Pepco Employees Assist Numerous Local Nonprofits During National Volunteer Month

Washington, D.C. (May 8, 2018) – Pepco employees volunteered nearly 600 hours at community service events throughout the District of Columbia and Maryland in celebration of National Volunteer Month in April. Employees supported arts and culture, community development, environmental sustainability and education initiatives that align with the company's purpose of powering a cleaner and brighter future for customers and communities.

"We are extremely proud of the hard work and dedication that Pepco employees continue to show by volunteering with local organizations that enhance our local communities on a daily basis," said Donna Cooper, Pepco region president. "It is our honor and pleasure to support our neighbors and communities with Pepco's ongoing volunteer efforts, not just for National Volunteer Month, but throughout the entire year."

Pepco employees have been strong supporters of nonprofit and civic partners for many years, and service highlights this year included:

  • Dave Velazquez, president and CEO of Pepco Holdings, along with Pepco volunteers, walked at the Greater Washington, D.C., March for Babies event. Pepco has been partnering with the March of Dimes for more than a decade to support families in the region to help give every child a healthy start. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7ZXngZxqqc)
  • Melissa Lavinson, senior vice president of Pepco Holdings Government and External Affairs, and Pepco employees volunteered at Food & Friends to help prepare meals for critically ill neighbors in the District of Columbia. Food & Friends strives to improve the lives and health of people with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other serious illnesses by preparing and delivering specialized meals and groceries that are designed to meet the medical and dietary needs of each of their clients.
  • Donna Cooper, Pepco region president, dozens of Pepco employees, and members of the Student Conservation Association (SCA) volunteered at Greenbelt Park helping to remove trash, clear trails, and restore damaged greenscapes along the Potomac River Watershed.  Pepco also volunteered at the Anacostia River Clean-up efforts throughout the region.
  • Marshall Murphy, Pepco Holdings vice president of Communications, and Pepco volunteers joined Martha's Table Joyful Food Market to help bring fresh fruits and vegetables to students at DC Benning Prep Elementary Campus. Joyful Food Markets are run exclusively in elementary schools in Wards 7 and 8, and offer the children and their families a chance to select their own fresh, seasonal produce and healthy non-perishable food.
Pepco and its employees are committed to enhancing the quality of life for its customers and their families in communities the company serves throughout the District and Maryland. In 2017, Pepco contributed more than $3.3 million to local nonprofits, while its employees volunteered nearly 7,000 hours to help hundreds of organizations throughout the region. Together, employees at Pepco and the Exelon family of companies volunteered more than 210,000 hours with a variety of nonprofit organizations in 2017.
