Washington, D.C. (July 25, 2018) – The African American Civil War Museum (AACWM) honored Pepco with its Corporate Citizen Award at the museum's 20th Anniversary Gala. The gala, which was held at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, capped a week of celebration at AACWM. Since the museum's inception, Pepco has been a proud community partner of this important tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of the United States Colored Troops (USCT). Event attendees included descendants of USCT soldiers, friends and neighbors.
In 1998, the African American Civil War Monument "Spirit of Freedom," was unveiled and is the first national memorial to pay tribute to the
209,145 soldiers, including 7,000 white soldiers, known as the United States Colored Troops. The African American Civil War Museum provides a comprehensive background on the memorial and helps visitors explore a little-known chapter of our shared history.
"We are honored to be recognized for our lasting commitment to AACWM," said Donna Cooper, Pepco region president. "Our partnerships with historic institutions, like AACWM, helps us give back to the communities we serve."
"It is our pleasure to present Pepco with our Corporate Citizen Award," said Dr. Frank Smith, AACWM Founding Director. "We have had 20 good years of progress and growth as an organization, and Pepco's involvement has been key to that development. The future looks bright, and it's time to celebrate our path to progress as we plan for the future."
In 2017, Pepco contributed more than $3.3 million to local nonprofits, while employees volunteered nearly 7,000 hours to help hundreds of organizations throughout the District of Columbia and Maryland. Together, employees at Pepco and the Exelon family of companies volunteered more than 210,000 hours with a variety of nonprofit organizations in 2017.
