Washington, D.C. (March 8, 2022) — Pepco's Maryland multi-year plan, approved by the Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC) in June 2021, continues to support efforts to help make the local energy grid smart, stronger and cleaner for the company's approximately 591,000 customers in Montgomery and Prince George's counties, while assisting the region in the long-term recovery from the pandemic.
As authorized by the PSC, Pepco Maryland energy delivery rates stayed flat in 2021 through certain tax benefits and adjustments to offset approved rate increases. Delivery service rates will increase beginning April 1, 2022, but will be partially offset by certain tax benefits through March 31, 2023, as approved by the PSC just last month. With the rate adjustment and offsets approved by the PSC, beginning in April 2022 typical residential electric bills will increase by $3.48 per month as compared to last year. Individual customer bill increases may differ from these amounts, depending on household energy use.
Pepco's multi-year plan includes hundreds of projects to modernize and reinforce the local energy grid between June 2021 and March 2024. This includes:
Making the grid smarter, stronger and cleaner will also help the company withstand increasingly severe weather events, which are becoming more frequent due to climate change. Pepco's Maryland customers are benefitting from this ongoing infrastructure work. In 2021, for the second year in a row, Pepco's customers in Maryland experienced the lowest frequency of electric outages ever. Even when service was interrupted, crews safely restored service in 94 minutes, on average, across the company's Maryland service area.
Pepco recognizes that many customers are still navigating the impacts of the ongoing global pandemic and may have difficulties facing increased utility bills. As a reminder, Pepco offers bill payment assistance and payment arrangements. The company will work with every customer to help identify the support necessary to continue energy service.
