Pepco Ready for Winter Storm

WASHINGTON, D.C. (February 19, 2019) – With heavy, wet snow and ice forecasted to hit the region overnight and into Wednesday morning, Pepco is ready. Pepco’s Emergency Response Organization is prepared, and all available personnel are standing by to restore service for customers as safely and quickly as possible.

Snow and ice can accumulate on trees, adding significant weight that can cause branches to break and result in power outages for customers. If outages do occur, Pepco crews will work to repair the damage and safely restore service for customers as quickly as possible. In addition to internal line workers, Pepco has additional overhead line contractors and tree-trimming personnel, as well as crews from its sister companies, Delmarva Power and Atlantic City Electric, available to assist in any needed restoration effort. Should Pepco need extra assistance, the company will call on shared resources from other nearby companies in the Exelon family, including Baltimore Gas & Electric and PECO in Philadelphia.

Pepco reminds customers to stay safe during extreme winter weather and prepare for possible storm damage. Customers can visit Pepco’s website at, use the mobile app or contact the company at 1-877-PEPCO-62 (1-877-737-2662) to report any outages. Pepco urges customers to use extra caution when driving near working crews, vehicles, and equipment such as utility poles.

If storm damage does occur:
  • Always stay away from any storm damaged electrical equipment, especially downed power lines and tree limbs that may come into contact with power lines.
  • Check on elderly neighbors and relatives.
  • Don't connect your generator directly to your home's wiring. Never use a generator indoors or in an attached garage. Read and adhere to the manufacturer's instructions for safe operation.
  • Turn on water to a trickle to help prevent pipes from freezing.
  • Tune into local radio stations for safety and status reports.
  • Follow updated information about Pepco’s restoration efforts on Twitter or Facebook.
Just as Pepco has made preparations ahead of the storm, customers also should be prepared for the impact of severe weather:
  • Customers who need power for critical medical equipment should be prepared to relocate to a facility with electricity in case there is a power outage.
  • Have a supply of bottled water and easy-to-prepare, non-perishable foods available.
  • Charge cell phones and other mobile devices.
  • Have a flashlight with fresh batteries on each floor of your home.

Over the last five years, the investments made every day in the District and Maryland to modernize the local energy grid have enhanced reliability for customers. This work has helped drive down both the frequency and duration of power outages, resulting in record low outage duration in 2018.
