Pepco Welcomes the MLB All-Star Game to Washington, D.C. And Supports D.C. United Stadium Opening

WASHINGTON, D.C. (July 13, 2018) - Pepco is proud to be part of the critical services team that plays an integral role as Washington, D.C. hosts the 2018 Major League Baseball (MLB) All-Star Game and as D.C. United plays their inaugural match at their new home, Audi Field. In preparation for these exciting sporting events, Pepco has performed comprehensive physical inspections – visual examination, thermography, and 360 photography – of manholes and equipment between substations and event venues. Crews have also completed preventative maintenance work necessary to provide safe and reliable energy service for all customers including these two venues.

"We welcome players, visitors, and fans from across the country to the sports capital – the District of Columbia – and are proud to join the celebration by powering these important national sporting events," said Dave Velazquez, Pepco Holdings president and CEO. "Each and every day, we are working to enhance the local energy grid, inspecting equipment, installing new modern devices, and performing the essential work necessary to provide safe and reliable service for our customers large and small."

During the past several weeks, Pepco has worked with the Government of the District of Columbia, the MLB All-Star Game Host Committee, local, state, and federal agencies to coordinate the work necessary to provide safe and successful events for residents and visitors alike. Pepco's Emergency Response Organization is fully prepared to respond to any issues if needed. Pepco will have response crews onsite, at key facilities, as well as additional Pepco crews throughout these events.

Tens of thousands of people, from across the country, are expected to attend the 2018 MLB All-Star Game. The All-Star Game will include multiple events across Washington, D.C. beginning today, and leading up to the All-Star Game on Tuesday, July 17. Most events will take place at the Washington Nationals Baseball Stadium on the southwest waterfront and the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Pepco has also worked closely to support the MLS D.C. United's home opener at the newly constructed Audi Field stadium. Both Nationals Park and Audi Field are proudly powered by Pepco.

Late last year, Pepco energized its Waterfront substation, located within walking distance of Nationals Park and Audi Field in Southwest Washington.  This two-level substation, which provides essential power to the Buzzard Point, the Southwest Waterfront, and the Navy Yard areas of the District, is among the largest indoor substations ever built with provisions for six high-voltage transmission feeders and 72 electric distribution circuits. The substation design incorporated extensive community input, and includes multiple features that help activate the surrounding community.

Pepco stands ready to power important events and celebrations like the All-Star Game and the inaugural D.C. United match at Audi Field, to larger events like U.S. Presidential Inaugurations and State of the Union Addresses. Just a month ago, Pepco helped power the Washington Capitals to win the Stanley cup, when Pepco and its parent company Exelon, funded extended Metro service during the Washington Capitals historic Stanley Cup playoff series.

Pepco prides itself in being part of the Exelon family of companies, the only Fortune 100 in the electricity sector, and is pleased that the MLB chose Washington, D.C. for this significant event. Over the last five years, Pepco has spent hundreds of millions of dollars in the region to modernize the local energy grid resulting in record reliable service and response for customers.
