WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 29, 2018) – In 2017, Pepco contributed more than $3.3 million to local nonprofits, while its employees volunteered nearly 7,000 hours to help hundreds of organizations throughout the District of Columbia and Maryland. Pepco recognizes the importance to empower employees to design service projects that focus on education, environmental stewardship, diversity and inclusion, and community enrichment.
"Our employees actively support the communities where they live and work every day, and we are honored to facilitate such a dynamic culture of service here at Pepco," said Dave Velazquez, president and CEO, Pepco Holdings. "We encourage employees to not only take part in Pepco sponsored community service initiatives, but to take the lead and bring their ideas and passions to the table as well."
Pepco charitable contributions assist organizations that support education, the environment, arts and culture, and community development programs. In 2017, the company sponsored important community organizations including the March of Dimes, Girl Scouts of the National Capital Area, the American Heart Association, Step Afrika!, City Year, Friends of the National Zoo (Zoolights), The Salvation Army and United Way National Capital Area.
Our employees volunteered at numerous agencies across the region including: Bright Beginnings, Inc., a nonprofit that operates child and family development centers for homeless children whose families are in crisis shelters or transitional housing in Washington, DC; Martha's Table, a decades old organization that works to support stronger children, stronger families, and stronger communities by increasing access to quality education programs, healthy food, and family supports; and A Wider Circle, a Washington, DC nonprofit with a mission of helping adults and children lift themselves out of poverty.
At Bright Beginnings, Pepco employees served as classroom assistants and school aids. While at Martha's Table, Pepco employees helped to sort donations and hang merchandise. Pepco volunteers at A Wider Circle helped to facilitate a workforce development boot camp where they worked one-on-one with participants on online job searches, crafted targeted cover letters, and helped with the submission of employment applications.
Last year alone, Pepco's parent company Exelon and its 34,000 employees gave more than $52 million to nonprofits and volunteered over 210,000 hours with organizations across the country. This record-breaking community giving helped make a difference in the lives of nearly 3.8 million people last year, and supported more than 8,600 nonprofit organizations across 210 cities and 17 states and the District of Columbia.
