Pepco to Engage Stakeholders and Create Energy Efficiency Contest to Celebrate First Ever District of Columbia Energy Efficiency Day

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Oct. 2, 2019) – In honor of the District's first annual Energy Efficiency Day, Pepco today announced that it plans to work in collaboration with a variety of partners, including District government, to launch a District-wide contest that will encourage customers to take important steps to save energy, save money and reduce their carbon footprint. The contest will award customers who voluntarily take energy efficiency measures to save the most electricity during periods of typically higher energy use in the summer months.

Last month, Pepco and a diverse group of organizations, including the District Department of Energy and Environment, Federal City Council, DC Building Industry Association, Greater Washington Urban League, Greater Washington Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Living Classrooms, Catholic Charities of Washington, DC Chapter of the Sierra Club, DC Chapter of the American Lung Association, American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE), Advanced Energy Economy (AEE), National Housing Trust, Groundswell, Ceres, Natural Resource Defense Council, Alliance to Save Energy, and others supported the establishment of the first Wednesday in October, annually, as Energy Efficiency Day in the District of Columbia. Both Mayor Muriel Bowser and the Council of the District of Columbia recognized the day through a Mayoral Proclamation and the "District of Columbia Energy Efficiency Day Recognition Resolution of 2019."

"We are excited to recognize today as energy efficiency day in the District and to work in partnership to advance this innovative energy efficiency contest, helping the District of Columbia achieve a clean energy future and meet its leading climate change goals," said Dave Velazquez, president and CEO, Pepco Holdings. "As the local energy company for more than 100 years, we are a longstanding community partner. From our infrastructure, which is the central platform for deploying the solutions needed to meet the District's leading climate goals, to the thousands of hours our employees volunteer each year, we have a vested interest in the continued success of our communities and fostering a cleaner and brighter future for our customers."

Pepco, with input and support from key organizations, envisions formally recruiting customers for the energy efficiency contest during Earth Month in April 2020. Eligible Pepco customers in the District will be grouped into categories and customers that save the most electricity – on a percentage basis – in various categories during a one-month billing cycle in the summer months, will receive an award. A contest during this timeframe could maximize the amount of electricity avoided, drive down carbon and save money.  Pepco will honor the winners on Energy Efficiency Day on Oct. 7, 2020.

Pepco is announcing this new energy efficiency contest during the Washington DC Economic Partnership's (WDCEP) second annual WeDC Futures Forum, a local conference celebrating collaboration and innovation for entrepreneurs, makers and creatives, and government leaders that make the District the Capital of Inclusive Innovation.
