Power Down for Earth Hour March 24

WASHINGTON D.C. (March 23, 2018) - Pepco is encouraging customers to join millions across the world in powering down from 8:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, March 24, in celebration of Earth Hour.  Earth Hour was first observed in Sydney, Australia in 2007 as a symbolic lights out event, and has now grown into the world's largest annual grassroots movement to raise awareness about climate change.  A record-breaking 178 countries and territories, along with the International Space Station have participated in this global initiative.

In addition to turning off lights at our Edison Place headquarters during Earth Hour, Pepco is also urging customers to take a number of steps to save energy, money, and help the environment year-round through the Pepco Efficiency Rebates and Incentives and Programs, including:

  • Schedule a Quick Home Energy Check-up with an energy efficiency professional to evaluate insulation, heating and air cooling systems, lighting, appliances, and more;
  • Use a programmable thermostat;
  • Caulk and weather strip windows and doors;
  • Turn lights off when you leave a room;
  • Close blinds/shades/drapes in the summer and leave them open in the winter;
  • Use energy-efficient appliances: When shopping for appliances such as refrigerators, look for the ENERGY STAR® label, and purchase the most affordable energy efficient unit.

Before customers turn their lights back on this Earth Hour, they should take a moment to replace energy-wasting incandescent light bulbs with new LED lightbulbs, which typically use 75-90 percent less energy and last about 25 times longer.

Pepco's sister utility PECO is also participating by powering down to recognize this global event.
