Pepco Encourages Customers To Take Advantage of Utility Assistance Funds Available Through STAY DC

WASHINGTON, D.C.  (April 22, 2021) – Last week, District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser announced a new program to provide financial assistance for renters and housing providers that also extends support for residents struggling to make utility bill payments due to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The program, which is called Stronger Together by Assisting You (STAY DC), provides more than $350 million in assistance to help District residents who are challenged in meeting their financial needs.

Residents can visit https://stay.dc.gov/ to find out what financial support they qualify for and how to apply. Applicants also can call the STAY DC call center at 833-4-STAYDC for support throughout their application process.

"We applaud Mayor Bowser and her continued commitment to supporting residents and businesses across the District who are continuing to struggle due to the effects of the pandemic," said Donna Cooper, Pepco region president. "This expanded support can help ensure that residents in need have the means to get back on track with their utility bills and housing sustainability."

With millions of dollars in assistance funding available for customers who may be struggling to pay their energy bill. Pepco says customers need to act now to secure these essential funds that can help bring their account current. Pepco works closely with its community partners to connect customers with grants and programs like LIHEAP, the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program. LIHEAP provides grants in varying amounts based on a household's income size, type of fuel, and type of dwelling, with no repayment required. Customers who may not have previously qualified for energy assistance may now qualify based on their current financial situation. Customers in the District of Columbia could secure $1,800 in assistance just through LIHEAP alone. District of Columbia residents can apply for assistance online though the Department of Energy and the Environment website or by calling 3-1-1. Customers also can visit coronavirus.dc.gov/utilityhelp for information on additional programs.

Pepco is committed to helping customers stay connected through managing their energy needs and works as a proactive partner in raising awareness about the many important energy assistance opportunities available through the company. During the 2020 program year, Pepco's efforts helped more than 36,000 customers secure more than $26 million in energy assistance.
